July 2, 2011

Another day of working in the yard and checking on my Plurk buddies, FB, and blogs. I've realized that it's nearly impossible to document every moment of my teacher duties! Ideas take root in my mind as I work in my garden. Unlike the soil, these ideas don't leave traces under my fingernails.

From Plurk today I found @teromakero's interesting shared link. Tero is a Special Education Teacher in Finland. He's a musician who majored in Cuban Music and works with children on the autism spectrum. Here's his link on teaching emerging technologies http://melaniewiscount.wikispaces.com/Teaching+Emerging+Technologies

http://www.mguhlin.org/- One of Miguel's blogs. He's moving from FB to Google+

I learned that today is Jean Craighead George's birthdate-July 2, 1919- (Julie of the Wolves, My Side of the Mountain)and that she's still alive! My Side of the Mountain is one of those books I'd like my students to experience.

From my iGoogle page:
National Archives- I saw that today was the day, back in 1890, that the Sherman Anti-Trust Act was approved.
Free Technology For Teachers Blog: "A Cleaner Internet" (http://acleanerinternet.com/) download to eliminate the comments and related videos on YouTube. (Would be very helpful in school!)

July 1, 2011

I spent from 7:50PM until nearly 11PM reading my PLN (Plurk: Lona; Twitter: #LonaBreitkopf) and the several blogs I follow from teachers and techies. Here are some of the facts I gleaned:

~Diane Cordell's Blog- reflections on ISTE 2011- people left with a sense of "I can do that!"

~@bkfeather on plurk shared http://visibletweets.com/- put in a topic and the recent tweets (from Twitter of course) appear. She also shared:
her ISTE 2011 scoop.it: http://www.scoop.it/t/iste-links-shared-by-my-plurk-
buddies
http://simplek12.com/tlc/gxz37/: free ebook on uses of interactive whiteboard

~@Metsoskil from Plurk shared that Uzbekistan became the 127th country to access their classroom wiki (Mike is a middle school teacher from PA). Mike's blog, "A Teacher's Life for Me" covered his Friday's Five- Young Adult Books. I added two to the list, one of which was new to him.

~Another Plurker, @GFK from Atchison, KS, shared a Periodic Table of Visualization Methods (http://www.visual-literacy.org/periodic_table/periodic_table.html)Graphic organizers and so much more.

~Plurker @mindelei shared her GrammarNazi pet peeve of the week: "Make sure you use 'who' instead of 'that' when talking about people. Ex: Amy was the one who walked out." And, I added a couple pet peeves of my own. She also shared a new YA Lit Group on FB group for Teachers/Librarians. https://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_156202971117987

~@MichaelPCSD from Plurk shared that admins in Ogden, UT, have essentially broken the union. See "Ogden Teachers Get Take-it-or-leave-it Contract Deal" (http://www.standard.net/topics/education/2011/06/30/ogden-teachers-get-take-it-or-leave-it-contract-deal)

~@SkipZ from Plurk always shares several important teaching blog links daily. One was http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-word-games-play-sharpen-language-skills/. He also shared http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/30/technology/personaltech/30smart.html?_r=1&nl=technology&emc=ctb1 and said that he'd tried one of the 3-D apps and it was wonderful.

~Plurk's @giftedgal shared a teacher's site with LOADS of technology tips: http://www.edzone.net/~mwestern/stuff.html

Purpose

As a Special Educator at the high school level I co-teach English 11 and US History as well as run Resource periods for students on my caseload. Some people apparently think that teachers don't work in the summer time. Along with other teachers I'm out to prove those people wrong.
